Bought a house a few months back and just started on decorating the bathroom. Couple of things have come up that I could use some advice on.

The ceiling is new plaster, not a problem will mist coat it before putting on 2x coats of white emulsion. But, I've removed most of the paper that was on the wall and two issues have shown up.

a) The wall is also new plaster but the previous owners have put a coat of emulsion on followed by paper and the paint is coming off with the paper, I assume it was never sized.

b) There are some odd spots of black mould down the side of the toilet and at the tops of the wall.

Do I need to scrape all the paint on the wall before I size? I assume so, but is it best with a scraper or with some P180 grit? And if I bleach the areas where the black mould is showing and then put a couple of coats of Damp Stop over before papering it, will that do the job or not?

zinsser primer Is your friend!
It was mine too!

Rubbed down black spots lightly, went over with this stuff, perfect.

And instead of a mist coat, if you can, use the new plaster paint they sell In toolstation/screwfix. Very good stuff

We’ll be good again... one day

Highly recommend the Zinsser permawhite also in the bathroom for walls/ceilings, it is pretty much bulletproof. I think this is an all in one solution, but I used some zinnser primer first. Limited ventilation in our bathroom, and 6 months in it still looks as good as when it was first done - which for the cost of all the Zinsser I am very glad about!!

i'd also work out why you're getting mould in those places. eg. along the top of the wall may be a cold spot because the roof insulation isn't going fully into the eaves.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

It's almost certainly as you suggest. We bought the house from the council and as we know local councils are generally a bunch of cowboys.

Theres a lot to do on the house to get it back into shape, but first on the list to having the loft boarded out, at which point I'll get the insulation topped up.

But the bathroom is bad enough that it needs a remodel. What I'm doing currently is a stop gap for 2-3 years.
