What powers will they then have to investigate all the stuff the Tories have been up to?

PPE scandal, COVID contracts to mates and so on? I assume they can fully investigate everything and we could be looking at some serious penalties, fines, jail time if laws are found to be broken and there was clear corruption?

Or would they all be protected as they were in power at the time?

I suspect you will be proven to be correct.

The inquiry, which is an independent public inquiry set up to examine the UK’s response to and impact of the Covid-19 pandemic began on 28th June 2022, and as well as examining Tory corruption, it will also look at government negligence, as with Exercise Cygnus *

elsewhere

The select committee has just begun its investigation into whether Johnson deliberately misled parliament in statements that he made to the House about alleged breaches of lockdown rules in Downing Street - the committee announced that it had held its first meeting on the inquiry, and issued a call for evidence.

and

There are still unanswered questions regarding the £100,000 Johnson bunged to his then floozy (pole dancer), which is thought will be re-visited once evidence starts to be heard from both of the above. Much as with Russian money, the Lebedevs and Putin.

Whether criminal charges arise out of the evidence, will have to be seen.

However, if the less swivel eyed faction of the Tory Party gain control after the leadership battle, they will undoubtedly have a few scores to settle, and will not hesitate to 'tell all they know', to put the blame for the past three years solely on the bloater.

It will be interesting to see what happens. There is a degree to which a new Tory PM would do well to distance themselves from Johnson rapidly and to have him investigated and dealt with could work to their advantage. However, taking down many others with him could cause more problems. By the time there might be a Labour Government, no one will be pushing the issue any more as there will be many other problems to deal with.

I suspect that any findings will get swept under the carpet and it will simply be a quiet rumbling of discontent from the few who really care. I can't recall any deposed PMs being investigated for any alleged misconduct (Blair is the main one who springs to mind). I think the removal of power is considered enough and maybe any current incumbent is afraid that a future could always catch up with them too. So dreadful and deposed PMs instead just enjoy the gravy train of corporate benefits that is associated with their position in society.

Unless the electorate holds the party to account (and I suspect we won't) they will have got away with it all (aside from the worst offender not being able to hold office until the 2030s as was his recent stated aim).

if labour did get in next time it would be a poisoned chalice with things as they are, staggering level of inflation, cost of living crisis, another covid wave, brexit inheritence

if it weren't for the continuing impact on the poorest people it'd be better to leave the stinking tories to clear up their own poo

They would only have a public inquiry option (if some one has broken the law its the police responsibility).

But public inquiries are toothless as the Iraq war public inquiry proved, especially as they take years to complete.

err, that's the point of a public enquiry. What follows (charges ?) will be determined by whether any criminal acts were found to have taken place.

My fear there is that the rules around PPE procurement were so 'wooly' that they could be exploited, without actually breaking the law. Much might be considered 'insider trading' were it in the City, but I am not sure what certain folk being given preferential treatment falls under.

Again with the bloater the key word is 'knowingly'. That he lied us not in question, he did so as a matter of routine. But proving it is another thing. However, the burden of proof here, is not that of a criminal court. It is one of the 'balance of probabilities ', and it is doubtful any MP would now wish to open themselves up to accusations of not being impartial by trying to defend a 'finished' man

The real question is whether the bloater can be made to give evidence under oath, which carries a prison sentence were he to lie to the committee, otherwise having him merely found guilty and the matter dealt with by Parliament is not going to achieve much, given his record.

"You fat boy, are a notorious liar and having been found guilty of lying to Parliament are hereby suspended from Parliament for 10 days ''.

An interesting comment of being made to swear an oath can be read here -

The Sunday Times is now running with a story about how the gut bucket tried to get another woman he had befriended a job - this time at City Hall.

The Independent has coverage of that story

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/boris-johnson-young-woman-relatio

which might explain why he saw no wrong in Pincher the perv, or the porno MP

Or the new education secretary who thought it was OK to give the finger to protestors shortly before being appointed.
