Here's a piece I did on the 30th anniversary!

It Was 30 Years Ago Today 4th Feb 2014 06:00
Thirty years ago today Jason Dozzell became the youngest player to score a goal in the English top flight, a record which still stands. Aged just 16 years and 57 days, the Chantry High School pupil was given his debut as a sub and netted the final goal in a 3-1 home victory over Coventry City in the old First Division. TWTD caught up with Jason to find out what he recalls of that momentous day. 23

13,406 in the top flight, while still putting out a decent team. That seems to be really low

Mariners last game. What looks a good team on paper was starting to lose it's cohesion (we only survived that year to to an excellent late run), Brennan and Doz being thrust in, Wark on his way to soon after, Burley, Gates, Osman (told he was going without prior notice) soon to follow.

About on par with most grounds at the time. Economic struggles, poor stadiums, hooliganism kept lots of people away.

I was there ! It was a great moment and I remember there was hype before the game that he would get on and was going to be a great player. Jason was still attending Chantry school and there are pictures of him at school the next day surrounded by fans !

A great moment in Ipswich football history !

It still was a decent team, but Bobby Ferguson was not a good fit as manager. Coventry were feisty that day, Mariner was knobbled by them, left with a broken rib and was a passenger for the second half as we had already made our sub change, so he had to stay on. We had no outlet and were under the cosh a bit at times so the 3rd goal by Dozzel came as a joy and relief. Small crowd as has been said, but a good atmosphere.

In the games leading up to this one there were murmurs on the terraces of Jason dozzell. Back then everyone pronounced his name dozzl. It was different back then. There was not so much news on youth matches and supporters just didn't know what was coming through. But news on him had certainly filtered through to the churchman's grapevine. It was on the cards that he'd make it in the game. The rest is history. The thing I remember about him as a player was his turns in the middle of the pitch and then turns again. This would confuse some of the best CM of the day. Memories.

The way Jude Bellingham moves reminds me of him.

Gates were still low when I was a kid, I went to top-flight games in the early-mid 90s where you could pick your seat so few were watching us, and our opponents had some of the stars of that era.

It only really went mad for us in 1999-2005 where our gates were strong season on season.
