I’m not sure anyone is critical of nationalisation other than those with their own interests. His manifesto was undeniably popular.
I read the article and he hasn’t explained how state ownership of utilities would actually solve the energy crisis (it won’t). It’s all emotive, populist stuff. Given utility firm profit is under 2pc of the cost (hence many went bankrupt) to the household it’s a mere drop in the ocean when bills are forecast to hit over £5k.
The problem is on the supply side and there are no easy solutions:

I’m not sure why Starmer hasn’t pursued nationalisation openly - assume to avoid the usual press assassination, perhaps he can quietly move forward on it once he’s elected.
Trains seems a no-brainer since we subside it anyway, and by it’s nature there is no competition if I want a train to Ipswich it’s Abellio or nobody!
Telecoms I’m unsure. I’ve not paid a price increase for years by moving around providers so I feel that does offer value.
