All those military men, with all those medals. 13:36 - Sep 13 with 1039 viewsnoggin

We can only imagine the horrors those men have witnessed and the bravery they showed to earn so many awards.

Poll: If KM goes now, will you applaud him when he returns with his new club?

I was awarded 2 medals during my time, I've never worn them and I don't even know where they are. I never earned those medals and I find them an insult to the brave men and women who deserve them.

Over a 15 year period a soldier could have :
2 jubilee medals
1 long service medal
GSM for N Ireland (even if a role that is at zero risk)
OSM for Afghan
UN medal for Cyprus

the list goes on.....point being the medals do not signify the courage or battle scars....

That was my original point.

I think I am right in saying that if a Royal Family member is Colonel-in-Chief (or equivalent) of a Regiment (or equivalent) then if members of that Regiment (etc) serve and are awarded a campaign medal, the Royal Family member is awarded it as the symbolic embodiment of the Regiment.

So, yeah, many of them are actual Active Service medals.

But the Regiments (etc) are usually very proud of their links with their Colonel-in-Chief (etc) and see it as the Regiment's history being honoured by them wearing it, so it is a more complex dynamic than it might at first appear.

Hmm...we used to poke fun at Idi Amin for awarding himself more medals than Dick Dastardly gave to Muttley. Now, whenever I accidentally glimpse a ceremonial royal occasion, I am dumbfounded by the sight of royals all proudly wearing military uniform and more bling than Mr T, although virtually none of them have seen any action. Again, if we are to modernise the monarchy, let's break the unnecessary link with the military, with various Royals acting as "Colonel in Chief" to various regiments.

I've nothing against people wearing decorations they been given for service, whether I agree with it or not, but Edward is wearing a Silver Jubilee medal which happened when he was about 14.
