Sounds like there may be a life extending service mission in the future. Great news if true.

Such an iconic piece of kit, would be a shame if was just left to stop.

its a feasibility study, the emphasis on study part not a commitment to do any of this, just to look at if commercial space capabilities could be used to boost Hubbles altitude, and maybe replacing the gyros and a few other bits though not to Shuttle levels of a service mission

But such a mission would be incredibly risky, Hubble servicing even with the Shuttle was considered one of the highest risk missions for those astronauts, though they are suggesting this could be uncrewed.

lets see what they come up with.

If they can save the Hubble within a reasonable budget and with no risks to astronauts then they should at least try, it's iconic.

However it's worth pointing out that ground based telescopes are far superior to what they were when Hubble was launched and can compete with it now using things like interferometry and laser based adaptive optics (to counter the movement of the atmosphere in large single telescopes).

Here is a comparison of Neptune from the VLT with and without adaptive optics and then a comparison of the VLT to Hubble (the VLT image is better than the Hubble image):

Ground based solutions are also a lot cheaper.
