The curious case of Evan Ferguson 13:33 - Apr 6 with 1232 views | Asa | As I understand it, we were pretty serious contenders to bring him in on loan in January, then a few things moved, Brighton needed a striker, Ferguson comes in, scores and the rest is history. Very happy with Hirst, but likely to be the case that if Ferguson had signed on loan then Hirst would not have come in. Ferguson, at 18, now has 8 goals for Brighton in the last 3 months! He's scored 3 in 3 in the Premier League I think and looks an absolutely superb player. Even Kylian Mbappe was highlighting him as the danger man before Ireland played France. I think we can all see the scouting model we have now, Davis, Broadhead, Clarke, Hirst (if we are able to buy), but the one that's given me the greatest amount of confidence may be the player we didn't land. It's one thing knowing we can spot players that can look standout in League One. But the pursuit of Ferguson, how interested we were in him and what he's done in a short term is a massive statement of just how good the actual decision making attached to the analytics might be, the sort of player we might be looking at next season if we go up and why we can be massively confident that the scouting and recruitment side will keep on delivering. As relentless as we've been of late, we were a whisker away and a small bit of luck away from potentially having a kid tearing it up in the Premier League lining up top for us in the second half of the season. I can only imagine with the pull of this club in the Championship, the quality of player we've identified to reinforce what already looks a decent second tier side. If of course we get there! Brighton fought off quite a few clubs to sign him initially and he's really impressed in the Premier League 2 since joining. He's been tipped as a 'wonderkid' of Irish football for a while now, I would imagine he was on everyone's radar.

A lot of managers say they’d like at least a couple of windows before they’re judged, chance to get their own players, playing their style. What’s been done brilliantly with Mckenna is the gradual integration of new players - rather than the ridiculous approach Cook took. As Ashton said, there was no scouting system in place to use when they took over. We still got some brilliant players, but looking at this years recruitment, been spot on. I think our talent for spotting a manager has gone up a notch too since the Evans days.
