Did we need MM/PH/BWYWF to happen for Gamechanger to happen and return us to this optimistic state..... or would Gamechanger still have identified us a an underpriced asset bumbling around in the mid/lower championship?

I would argue that all of those created the perfect storm.

We know Evans had doubts about selling right up to the day he signed the papers so if you take out the relegation, Hurst wasting millions, Lambert attacking Evans and Cook's demolition job then it might just have tipped the balance.

Not suggesting any part of that was a good thing but in hindsight it seems to have worked out.

People might reply saying we still aren't back to where we were but I find that odd because where we were was mid table in the Championship max. We now have a much higher ceiling.

Truly impaired.

If you really want your 'sliding doors' moment.

What if Mick had actually been supported financially by Evans during that January transfer window and we actually pushed on and got promoted.

Perhaps not. But it has to be remembered that in the middle of McCarthy's tenure we were in the play-offs for the Premier League. Had that been follwed up on, then the optimism of being in the top tier or becoming a yo-yo club benefitting from parachute payments would arguably have eclipsed now, without the intervening years of gloom.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Tho we weren't 'mid table in the Championship max' under Magilton or McCarthy. The former had us finishing just a point outside the playoffs, the latter actually in them (having been 2nd at Christmas) and 7th (tho 5 points behind) a year later.
