It happened in my constituency, Lucy Fraser (Conservative) did not win most votes to become MP for South East Cambridgeshire, after she was declared the winner people speaking in the bar realised that she could not have won. The votes were recounted and that confirmed what they thought. But she was selected anyway and is now a prominent member of this Government. Very dodgy.

I presume you mean votes in a party selection contest and not in an election against candidates from other parties.

Still, as you say, looks dodgy.

EDIT: Looked it up. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/the-battle-of-the-tory-women-farc

Seems the mistake was someone taking the ballot papers home to check. Should have been properly checked on site. Imagine being selected to be the candidate by 61 votes out of 132. I suppose that is part of the level of interest in party politics.

The current Private Eye relates that a local election in Nelson Lancs was won by the tory, but the returning officer announced (in error) that the Labour candidate was duly elected. So the Labour councillor is now serving. The rightfully elected candidate can either launch expensive legal action to overturn the outcome, or hope the Labour councillor stands down. Neither possibility, Private Eye observes, looks likely to happen.

The Independent article is from 12 Jan 2014.
Wiki shows that Lucy Frazer did indeed become MP for South East Cambridgeshire in 2015.
However, Heidi Allen became MP for South Cambridgeshire in the 2015 GE so it seems it all ended happily-ever-after.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?
