Transfer window and current state of play 12:11 - Jul 10 with 1804 viewsJimmy86

Keep seeing people claiming that we can't spend big money on players in this transfer window and that we can't compete with established sides in the division... I don't necessarily believe this... With our owners and the financial backing behind them I would suggest the only teams we couldn't go toe to toe with are the teams just relegated from the premiership...

It isn't the Marcus Evans days, where we were shopping in the most basement of bargain bucket's... Supposedly we are one of the richest clubs in the championship, think we need to raise our sights higher in the transfer window...

Not saying overpay or anything like that, but we shouldn't be looking at cheaper punts.. that was the previous regime and not the current one

Our overall budget isn't determined by how rich our owners are, it's determined by FFP regulations.

Like everybody else in the division we can spend Our Revenue + Approx £13m Loss Per Year + Anything we Raise in Transfer Funds.

Here's roughly what that looks like for a team with a similar sized fanbase - Middlesbrough:

They made £26.9m in 2021-22, paid £28.4m in wages and salaries. Made a profit of £1.4m on player trading. Still made a loss of £15.3m after tax.

We'll have a bit more headroom (Boro will have a whole squad on typical upper Championship salaries, we won't yet I imagine) but the idea that we're going to have this huge leeway to freely spend £4m+ on multiple players is just fantasy.

Like most other Championship clubs our only route to out-competing teams dropping down from the level above is finding under-recognised value and developing players.

Ashton pretty much said this himself on our club podcast. He referenced that on a plymouth fam forum someone talked about our finanical clout but he said we may have one of the richest owners but it's irrelevant under FFP.

We have to use that clout to improve all revenue streams so much so that its not how much you make every season but how much you don't lose.

I see what you're saying and it fair to say you're more clued up on FFP than I am 😂 so, cheers for the helpful break down..

It certainly helps that our attendances will be up and that the kit sales are going well, as that will all help towards turnover etc.

Still reasons to be hopeful and I think we're in a better place than we ever were under Evans..

I was expecting us to add quality, not quantity. Sign, maybe three players on a fee, with a couple of quality loans, too.
Certainly , for a decent striker, I'd expect us to pay north of 4m....
But there are obviously limits.

More especially when Alan Nixon linked us with Adam Armstrong from Southampton, whilst we were still in league 1! That would be a hefty fee, if that ever were to happen... Nixon has got a few right regarding town hasn't he?

I'm sure we'll get some decent players in by the end of the window

Lots of reasons to be hopeful, for sure! Not least that the people in charge seem to know what they're doing...

Coventry is an example of a club presumably no better off than us (I haven’t checked detail) but where they have created huge headroom for acquisition and wages through buying cheap and selling high. The profit they make when they sell their striker allows massive short term losses on several players ie aimed at taking them to the next level.

We need a 10, 15, 20 mil sale every now and again to do what they did with simms.

I think a few factors are at play.

The first, we have a fairly large squad with pretty much 2 senior players for each position on the pitch. Obviously, players will have to be moved on and the squad size trimmed.

The second, and most obviously reason why we haven't signed many players, is that we're shopping for quality and that requires patience. Premiership teams will want to assess and make judgments on players before authorising moves. Clubs outside of the Premiership want to drive up prices, get several clubs involved and get the best prices for their assets. So, it's a waiting game. Very easy to attract lower quality Championship players to League 1 on good wages....totally different game when when you're trying to bring in top end Championship quality...with 5-6 other sides also in the hunt.

Spose the only thing in our favour now, compared to the Evans regime is that our revenue will be increased healthily, as a result of ticket sales and club merchandise... We were selling out games in league one, so imagine that would follow on into the championship, what with the feel good factor surrounding the club now
