Baggott development 11:50 - Jul 30 with 923 viewswrightsrightglove

There’s obviously been talk of Baggott going out on loan again, but is there an argument for him staying with us for this season? McKenna mentioned that he’s improved massively over the last 5 weeks in preseason so is he better off staying with us and training with the first team under our coaches rather than going to a club where he’ll play more but be coached nowhere near as well? Maybe get 6 months coaching into him with us and let him play the cup games and then loan him out second half of the season?

Training and playing actual matches are completely different.

He isn’t going to get any meaningful game time here so a loan, to the right club in the way they play etc, is the obvious answer for me.

It’s definitely a balance. There’s a tendency to think a loan is always going to be better, and I do think senior games with points at stake are vital, but I do think it’s only a part of the puzzle. He won’t get the training and development opportunities Monday - Friday anywhere else that he’s afforded with us and our current set up AND games, as it’ll likely mean he drops a division or 2, and nobody in L1 or L2 can offer it.

What’s better for him, being part of our set up and playing 5 times this season (cups etc) but being with the squad and coaching staff day in day out, or playing 30 times for a Gillingham? I don’t think it’s clear cut. Ideally he’ll go to league 1, perhaps one of the bigger clubs like Derby or Reading, but then does he get regular minutes? It’s not straight forward. Personally I think keep him around until January, see how he kicks on with us and he doesn’t count towards the 25 man list. Then get him 15+ games elsewhere in the 2nd half of the season when we’re quite possibly out of the league cup.
