Yes, that's the risk but it's definitely worth taking.
You get the feeling that he 'wants' to get fit and play but moreover play for KM.
Compare this signing to the likes of Mark Fish, Piotr Malarczyk or Ingamarrson....all punts but this guy is on a different planet.

With his character known that removes a risk. Having a top level defender mindset around Wolfie Burgess and Baggot will be gold. There will be knock on for the full backs. If he can’t get match fit he will have company from Edmundson.
