Nightingales 10:52 - Apr 13 with 1014 viewsGeoffSentence

Saw and heard my first nightingales of the year today.

In fact my part of the Ipswich-Sudbury=Shotley Golden Triangle was absolutely throbbing with the flutey little feckers. It was probably my best ever day for nightingales.

A day that starts that well is bound to carry on in the same vein, and what with 'Boro needing a win to keep their slender play off hopes alive I am convinced it will be a throbbing game ending in a comfortable Town win.

Whitethroat, lesser whitethroat, chiffchaff, willow warbler, sedge warbler, blackcap, Cetti's warbler... but no Nightingales for me yet.

Admittedly some of those are dependent on the Merlin app for song recognition, as I'm not what I ought to be on the old song front, but I'm confident of all except the lesser whitethroat, what I didn't see.

Throbbing.

Cetti's Warbler is an interesting one.

Merlin can be a bit hit and miss when it id's more unusual birds, told me I had an Iberian Chiffchaff in my garden at the weekend. Don't think so.

Yes, Merlin told me I had an Iberian Chiffchaff too, but I laughed and assumed it was just a Brit who was just back from Magaluf. There are loads of Cetti's warblers around, they're here all year - they often make me jump with their first (loud) note, the little b...irds. I just put it in to up my 'warbler' count. In fact I had it reduced by one when I was informed by a proper birder that my Willow Warbler was in fact just a Chaffinch.

...or even a Chiffchaff!
