Brazilian names 17:27 - Jul 5 with 827 viewsSharkey

(Unsure whether to put this in 'football' or 'general', but I go 'general' in the hope there's someone who knows a bit about Brazil.)

Why do Brazilian players so often have their first names on the back of their shirts? (Allison at Liverpool. for example?) I do realise that it's not only Brazilians who do this, but there seem to be disproportionately many.

Is it just that one player did it and other Brazilians followed, or is it that in Brazilian football it 'always' has been like this, or is it something 'deeper' in Brazilian culture that the surname has a lesser status? ( Maybe the mother's and the father's surname are considered equal? )

I can see why Cruyff Junior might want not to wear his father's name. But Zlatan Ibrahimovic, in a rare moment of reflection said how much he regretted having 'Zlatan' on his shirt for a while, when he realized how much it hurt his father that he was not wearing the family name.

Thanks for that!

I just looked up Socrates, and found out that was also a nickname. Glad it never caught on in England, because in the witless way we have here, it would just be the surname with a 'y' chucked on the end. (I remember Mick McCarthy's 'one-of-the-lads' press-conferences with a shudder.)

Current Portuguese/Brazilian footballers full names.

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro.
Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior.
Diogo José Teixeira da Silva.
Vinícius José Paixão de Oliveira Júnior.

Portuguese naming customs are complex and long winded so they often have just one name or a nickname on their shirts as is the case with Diogo José Teixeira da Silva IE Diogo Jota. In Brazil if a man called Ronaldo has a son called Ronaldo the son will be know as Little Ronaldo or as it is in Portuguese Ronaldihno.
