Linesman positioning 12:14 - Jul 23 with 1385 views | ChrisAllen7 | This morning I was watching the season review of 01-02. During the season we play Man Utd away and I noticed something odd. The linesman was positioned on the opposite half of the pitch. Normally when watching on TV they are positioned to the Goalkeepers left and always have been as far as I know and remember?! Does anyone know wether this was normal or if referees used to be able to decide where the linesman should be? Can we claim for 3 points from 22 years ago? 😂 An odd post I know but it really confused me!
Linesman positioning on 12:23 - Jul 23 with 1283 views | Linners | Unless they've changed the rules (and they might have!) it used to be up to the ref, depending on what diagonal they prefer to run. Most prefer to run with the asst referees on their right, but not always.
Linesman positioning on 12:29 - Jul 23 with 1261 views | Basuco | In the past it used to be the referee who decided, each linesman would look at the quarter of the pitch in front of them and the referee would run a diagonal line to cover the other half of the pitch, including going in both penalty area's, but these days referee's do not go into the penalty box's and seem to go all over the pitch. Often missing quite a few incidents, not sure when or why things changed or if the referee still decides which side of the pitch the linesman will run.

Linesman positioning on 13:34 - Jul 23 with 1027 views | PhilTWTD | If it's the game I'm thinking of I was pretty sure at the time one of their goals never crossed the line, so a poorly positioned linesman may account for that! I think they can swap over if there's damage to the pitch or whatever on the side they normally use.
