Saints forum vs twtd 22:08 - Sep 20 with 2737 viewsvictorysquad

A huge difference in mentality in what the fans are writing on the forums these days

Ours; considered, mainly productive conversation with 100% support behind the squad and manager

Theirs; questions over players, formations, playing style, negativity, how the manager talks nonsense, etc

I cannot quite believe it myself but we really have a totally joined up football club from ownership through to the fans, and what a powerful thing that is.

Tbf most of that all traces back to the difference between Martin and McKenna I'd probably feel much the same as them if he was our manager.

To be fair, they have the new Paul Lambert managing them, we have the new Pep Guardiola.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

I happened to catch Radio 5 talking about Southampton last night. The subject of Martin's inflexibility came up, of the necessity to learn lessons and adapt in the Prem. Passing reference was made to McKenna in contrast and somebody (it may have been Clinton Morrison) interjected "But he's a top manager ...", the rest made noises of agreement before the discussion flowed on.

Thought it was an interesting moment.

He's inflexible and not nearly as bright as he seems to think he is. Not a bad manager by any means but not Prem level, nowhere near the level of McKenna, and I'll be very surprised if he last much longer at Saints.

Cue Saints thrashing us with a tactical masterclass

My issue with Martin (besides the fact he’s a knb) is that he has probably underachieved at every club he’s been at.

MK Dons - should have gone up with a side with Twine, Darling and ORiley (albeit he left in January if I remember rightly)

Swansea - average mid table finish with Piroe and Downes.

Southampton - finished 4th, not bad by any means but the goal for them was surely Top 2. Yes he got them up through the play-offs but we all know that’s just a lottery.

He’s not been bad anywhere, he’s just consistently done slightly less than you’d have expected that team to do and had a good enough set of players to get by.

Hasn’t Martin publicly dug out the atmosphere at St Mary’s lately? I’ve not actually seen any of his comments directly but 2nd hand heard he’s spoken about it. No idea if that’s true or what the atmosphere there is like but you get the feeling if we can frustrate them and ideally take the lead then it might get a little tense.

If our trip last year is anything to go by there’s more atmosphere on the Moon than there is at St Mary’s

1.35 ppg at both Mk Dons and Swansea. Not bad, but as you say that’s upper mid table returns at 2 clubs where that was at best par, and that’s probably being generous. Not really sure what he’s achieved that made him coveted by Saints but would imagine it’s more his style than actual ability to convert it into impressive yields.

He got them up last season to be fair, but again I’m not sure finishing 4th was much more than par either with the squad he had.

There's a link in the sidebar to the Southampton twtd equivalent, https://www.fansnetwork.co.uk/football/southampton/news/63004 - talk of John Eustace in the frame to take over. Uninspiring you'd imagine for their fans if correct.
