2 X friendlies in Spain & Holland over the course of the next week ...

Can't help but feel like those are completely pointless when your talking about players who are playing week in, week out in the Prem who could probably do with a rest!

I know they've got a tournament in the summer but hopefully we can expect some significant risk management when it comes to Delap & Hutch.

Everyone in the PL have players that are away for internationals that need a rest. Every manager will think those players are too important to come back knackered or broken.

They're both developing as players. It is all adding their long term value.

I'm all for competitive international fixtures, and I'm not at all advocating that players are withdrawn from those. They have a place and are important to the long term health of international football.

I'm talking about U21 friendly matches .... they have no meaning and two of our best players have no break, have to travel round Europe all for no real reason.

I suspect Villa fans are equally miffed with Rodgers heading off etc

I'd rather they didnt happen.

But I'm pleased for the players, and I am sure they are loving it.

I would argue Delap would not have been the success he has been for us had he not had some extended time with the England U21s and been part of seems to be a pretty good cohort.

Having said that, I do think all international football is pointless.

They're young players who need managing, but I'm not sure fatigue is a problem particularly when we're not in any European competitions and out of a League Cup that we put our 2nd string in. I'm sure given its friendly games there will be a sensible amount of rotation, I'd imagine they'll play no more than 120 minutes across the 2 games, just need to hope they come back without injuries.

I do think international friendlies are a bit pointless generally though unless its in the immediate run in to a major tournament.
