About referees not giving stuff, for example the grappling at corners, several times last night challenges came in on players that the ref let go, that in the Champ, would definitely be given.

This isn’t just vs us either, Pedro’s intended elbow v Newcastle [?] is another that springs to mind.

So, is VAR stopping or affecting the decision making of the on field officials, and have VAR officials become exceptionally reluctant to overturn on field decisions? I assume to prevent the weakening of the authority of the referees.

Last season in the Championship when we had several PL refs it was notable how poor their judgement on decisions was. Very poor. I put this down to them being wet nursed by VAR. I think this season has confirmed this was the case. Not impressed.

It's bonkers, isn't it?

Let's spend millions bringing in a system to help the officials come to the correct decision all the time, and then let's not overturn incorrect decisions in case it makes it officials look bad!

Why bother with it at all if it's not making the game any fairer?

Without a doubt refs don't officiate how they used to.

Different reasons but each because of VAR imo

Firstly.. some feel var will protect them if they get things wrong so they don't make the tough decisions themselves

2nd.. some feel like things will get overturned and it then puts pressure on them if they make a tough decision and var finds it wrong. If var decide you're wrong. You've basically fked up whilst doing your job.

It's basically shambles.

a niche perspective
