Tell me ... because I really don't get it? Jack Clarke sent over one of the best corners we've ever taken for the winner against Wolves and I haven't understood, week after week why he has never taken one again until last night when he took a quick short corner. Why??

Baffling ...

Talking of Clarke, in the first half last night he took the ball on the touchline, took it down the line and sent in a dangerous cross. Just like his Sunderland days. Although I thought he played quite well in his 'new' position of left sided 10, why didn't we try something different in the second half when we were out of ideas and put him wide left, bringing Townsend on and slipping Broady into the left 10.

It's all set up around Leif isn't it. But when Leif isn't doing the business we should be trying something different.

The left hand side has been set up like last season for Leif all of this season. Unfortunately he doesn't beat the defender and his crossing has been really poor.

The irony is that (except last night) our defending from corners has been very good but our attacking has been very poor, and that has been the case not just this season.

Part of the problem is that despite tall players like Greaves we don't have players like Maguire (or Berra or Smith) who are good at making space and getting on the end of balls. I think this is something that maybe can't be coached and some people are just better at it than other.

I might add that from what I saw of him at Liverpool, Enciso is probably our best corner taker.

Greaves is too soft. Someone prepared to get hurt would've been a better bet in there. Burgess for example.

Burgess though has only scored 4 league goals for Ipswich (not sure if all headers), but is second to none when it comes to defending at corners.

Even he doesn't seem to me to have that killer instinct that is needed to score at corners.

Indeed, all our defenders even when they do win head the ball often don't get the header on target or head the ball weakly.

We certainly lack a defender capable of scoring at corners, or do we?

Burgess, Greaves get in the right position but attack the ball in the same way as they do when defending more often than not the ball goes too high. Perhaps it’s a coaching deficiency.

We win a lot of first contacts on corners and attacking free kicks but we don't score enough. From memory, Burgess hit the bar at Spurs and has missed at least one other good headed chance, Greaves has missed a couple, O'Shea missed a sitter at 0-0 against City, Delap hit the post against Spurs and missed a very good chance against either Fulham or Villa earlier in the season. We've created a fair amount from set pieces but we don't have players who are clinical when they get that first contact.
