it will take them years to disentangle themselves. It will not happen overnight but when it does it will have a detrimental effect on the East Anglian economy. Having said that I feel, on an emotional level anyway, we should demand the US leaves our airbases asap after he makes the decision.

A significant number of USAF personnel never leave the bases.
Also depends of what you do with the facilities left behind. Mildenhall would make a good airport for freight, and ease pressure for slots elsewhere. |  |

I think it's more the case that NATO will die a slow mouldy death now as it is replaced by a cross European agreement between nations (and notions of a Federal Europe with its own army will go the same way as NATO) so that mutual security can be strengthened on Russia's borders and in the Middle East. But we may find ourselves with some partners who are almost as uncomfortable as the United States is right now. But in the case of Syria, for example, we will have winners on our side. |  |

Could also have detrimental effect on the US, imagine all these service personnel end up back inthe US. Most will not be needed , could have huge effect on there jobs market. Especially with Musk's chainsaw cutting costs. |  | | |

There can’t be that many left. There used to be loads of US personnel around Ipswich and wider area in the 80s, and A10 Warthogs buzzing over east Ipswich in and out of Bentwaters. I thought they shut most of their bases after the Berlin Wall came down? |  |

They still have a presence here it’s just massively scaled down. Losing it wouldn’t affect our economy, they buy on base mostly. |  |

It's not really what the sevicemen, its the amount of work that's done on base by British companies in construction and servicing the the likes of Mildenhall and Lakenheath. There is also still a prescence at Alconbury and Molesworth.
There has been a tremendous amount of work done at Lakenheath for the new fighters which has all been charged at a far higher rate for the buildings than if they had been built off base.
