Lack of Transfer activity, perception and reality. 12:51 - Jun 29 with 1183 viewscbower

When the fixtures came out on Thursday, I suddenly became a little anxious that we had not dipped our toes into the transfer market yet. Lots of outgoings or returned loanees - Delap, Burgess, Tuanzebe, Luongo, Enciso, Phillips, Cajuste, Godfrey with only the returning loanees in the shape of Humphreys, Baggott , Clarke and Al-Hamadi to offset these. I had dismissed those who were getting a little twitchy as being too premature but all of a sudden I found myself feeling somewhat anxious. However, a quick look at the BBC transfers for June and I was back to being more settled. With the exception of Norwich, there has been very little inbound activity at Championship clubs. A few loans and undisclosed purchases here and there but nothing much. I imagine it will pick up in the next fortnight and look foward to a few juicy purchases into the bargain.

I think that the market we are in for players is very different to that of the lesser clubs such as Norwich and QPR. The deals we are pursuing will likely be somewhere within a delicate chain of deals which require bigger deals to complete first before ours can go through (Cajuste being a prime example). You also have the added PSR deadline of the 30th of June to account for, which will mean a number of clubs on the edge of that will be waiting for that date to pass to get transfers completed. It’s a slow period on the face of it but there will be a lot going on behind the scenes - almost everything about the post Evans ITFC has been more slick and professional, recruitment being something we are much better at keeping under wraps than past times. Whilst there are clear areas to strengthen, we also have a much stronger base of permanent players at this time than almost anyone in the division, so it’s about waiting to get the right players on board for those positions. Everything coming out of the club still feels assuring, and no way O Shea commits to a new contract unless we are going at this year full tilt.

I think I heard nodge had signed something like 11 players. Have they lost a few too - some of their better ones? I heard Rowe is no longer there, there is speculation over Signs and Ronald McDonald. I think I heard Gunn has left too. Are the replacements anything like as good?

I think we have the nucleus of a squad as good as the one we had at the start of 2023-24. However, we could do with a striker and a central midfielder as a minimum.

No idea of the quality of Nodge signings. They will be keen to hold on to Sargent I guess.
Think we need at least 2 midfielders to challenge for a starting spot myself, at least one striker to compete with Hirst and possibly another as I don't really see Al Hamadi even as 3rd choice but perhaps I'm wrong on that. Our loan signings this summer will be as interesting as our permanents.
For what it's worth, I reckon Hutchinson's release clause will be triggered late in the window which is a real pain in terms of a direct replacement. Maybe the club feel that Philogene is that player anyway?

Yeah, when I looked about a week ago there were about 7 or so clubs who hadn’t announced a signing and plenty more with just the one. And as others have posted, it was about now this time that we started to an announce signings last year and we were in more need/more of a rush then.

It’s fine. I’d rather we get players who can make a difference than panic buy rubbish like we have on a few occasions under Ashton/KM.

I wouldn't want Al Hamadi to be 3rd choice in an ideal world, but I am sure he could do a job provided we weren't relying on him alone for a prolonged period.

A late deal for someone like Hutchinson or Davis could be a problem. It would be wise to have some Premier League loan option lined up as a contingency.

I don't think we need a whole host of signings. Look at our back 4. There is an arguement for Johnson - O'Shea - Greaves - Davis all being the best players in the league for positions they play in. We're nicely stocked in wide areas and in the 10 roles, Philogene, Hutchinson, Szmodics, Chaplin, Broadhead, Clarke, with Burns and Ogbene to return at some point. McKenna will always only play with 1 up top and Hirst plays that role superbly.

To be honest, i think we'll need 2 strikers, 1 versitle defender who can perhaps play several positions, promote Baggott as a 4th choice CB, and 2 central midfielders. So, 4-5 signings top, assuming no one else leaves.

Good to see the club recognising that we need a bit more aggression and physicality in the squad. We were a soft touch last season, and the likes of Clarke and Philogene would do well to add another 5kg of muscle and fill out a bit.
