Academy question on 09:06 - Jul 16 by Pinewoodblue
Not this season. Not every Cat1 academy takes part, suppose we might in future years.
Following on from the question about clubs outside of Leagues 1 and 2 being in the EFL Trophy how do clubs from outside of the National League get into the National League Cup?
As well as National League Teams in the cup you also have these teams in it.
Blackburn Rovers Burnley Everton Manchester United Leicester City Nottingham Forest West Bromwich Albion Wolverhampton Wanderers Brighton & Hove Albion Fulham Southampton West Ham United Leeds United Middlesbrough Newcastle United Sunderland
Now yes we can argue fundamentally whether or not teams outside of Leagues 1 and 2 should compete in the EFL Trophy and likewise whether or not teams outside of the National League should compete in the National League Cup but that decision is beyond our control.
So seeing as our direct competition (and several from this season Championship) compete in these competitions surely it would do our youngsters good to do the same and get some experience.
Therefore I just wondered how teams go about getting into the National League Cup?
I think that there was some comment on teams getting into the EFL Trophy (I can't find the forum post now) but it was something along the lines of the top 16 PL Teams get an invitation and if they don't take it up then invitations can filter down.
But I wasn't sure how teams get into the National League Cup and does anyone know?
Possible in future years but already sorted for this season. Invitations are on position in the table, if I remember rightly, moving downwards if teams aren't up for taking part.

Google offers this as its AI Overview: The competition typically features the top 14 National League teams (excluding those promoted) from the previous season, along with the two teams relegated from League Two.
Premier League 2: Sixteen Under-21 teams from Premier League clubs participate, with all their matches played away from home.
Opt-Outs: Some National League clubs may choose not to participate, as seen with Barnet, Eastleigh, Solihull, and Southend last season.
Replacements: When clubs decline, their places are offered to other National League teams. For example, Dagenham & Redbridge, Wealdstone, Woking, and Ebbsfleet took the places of the four clubs who opted out.
