….used to have a speedway team called the Hawks.

In 1989, John Louis left his role as promoter there to return to Ipswich Witches and at the same time we signed promising youngsters Chris Louis & Mark Loram from them.

Although I presume the Hawks fans never bothered with the H’s at the start of each name.

Used to love my trips to Waterden Road on a Friday night to see the Witches beat the Hackney Hawks, which was nearly always the case.

I think they ended up as Hackney Kestrels when Crayford folded and moved there. (I'm not looking that up, I'm sad enough to remember)

My memory is misty but I have a feeling we (Ipswich) dropped down to the national league ( 2nd level at the time) from the top level (British league ) and pretty much took Hackney’s place and whole team back to foxhall ?
It could have been a time when the witches almost went out of business without the move ?

Poll: Is it an issue for you that the new England manager is foreign ?

Yes, I think that might be right.

I’d need to check, but after the John Berry glory years, Chris Shears had the Witches for the mid-80s until 1988 and as you say, we nearly disappeared, before John Louis effectively moved Hackney Hawks to Foxhall, including Chris Louis, Loram and I think some of the other riders… Dean Standing and Alan Mogridge.

First home match under Louis regime was Good Friday in the National League and he did a lap with a witch fancy dress costume on before the meeting.

John Louis was my first sporting hero, and the Louis dynasty continues to this day.
