Quick Match Thoughts - 10 things 23:46 - Aug 8 with 1759 viewsunstableblue

1) I’ve been to a lot of grounds and away days, but I think that was up there for home fans atmosphere - I think those that sit on their hands in the Sir Alf Upper need to consider that every single person in every home stand was on their feet and making noise
2) It was a horrible opening fixture, the ref was handling it badly, Brum had some dark arts going on, and their press was very very good…. Combine that with a disjointed and ungelled Town performance, well then an AWAY POINT is bloody good value
3) Anyone who thinks this league will be easy needs to look at some of the quality Brum had on the pitch tonight. Stansfield I’ve never rated but his energy was excellent. If Doyle was gelled and started it would have been much harder.
4) Their goal was error strewn from us, having said that overall OShea and Greaves masked the poor performance by being bloody dominant
5) Azor showed glimpses of what he can be, but he struggled with the intensity and Brum press and Taylor wasn’t helping him. Our general lack of cohesion meant Taylor was exposed and it wasn’t a performance that said to McKenna ‘you should consider me’ - we need Cajuste in immediately
6) Hirst was fired up, at times too much. But the ref did not help him, and space to run into was limited.
7) Szmodics was in and out, that early chance just needed more composure rather than blasting it wide. We need to stick with him, give him time to gel.
8) Clarke struggled again with the intensity of the game and the form of pre-season evaporated… we need to back him, give him time
9) McKenna needs to get them into a better shape, and consider his selection. Young (pantomine villlain) so improved us as a team. He should have started, Johnson had moment (and Ogbene) but we need better on that side. Leif was much better on the left, but Clarke ineffective ahead of him.
10) I thought the away end was raucous, but suddenly got quite toxic when we went one down…. There isn’t much resilience left after that Prem season. Thank God for the penalty - IT IS HUGE - Sunderland away like. As that toxicity doesn’t carry into the Sunderland home game. Hats off to Humphreys who put his arm around Azor and pointed at the away end at the end to build him up - future leader.

We learn a lot from that, much to improve, but come on stick with the project. And let’s bloody replicate that St Andrews home support. Remarkable

Thanks for the very balanced report nice to get a view from someone who was at the game. I agree we need the fans to really get behind the team but too many performances like that will make it unlikely.

I just think fans need to understand just how difficult a night that was. And also that our starting 11 will look somewhat different in a few weeks. Young starting at right back will immediately improve us.

Bring in Cajuste and Philogene and again it’s another level.

But McKenna needs to get the patterns of play going again - that’s where Brum were better, and patterns of play is what gave us that faith in McKenna.

But to your point Town fans need to have more patience and resilience.

Night night - but can I add that Ali was good for us on 00:18 - Aug 9 with 1355 viewsunstableblue

That cameo was perhaps his best minutes as a Town player

Brum struggled with his directness and physicality

I think Brum had done their homework. Seeing how we struggled against an intense press last season, they tried to replicate that (but with roughhousing and dark arts having to stand in for Prem skill and athleticism). That had a lot to do with why we could not get anything going and all our play was so broken up.

Didn't help that the Ref was blowing his whistle like it was going out of fashion during the first half, every time two players came together.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Whenever I've been to St Andrew's I've always been impressed with the atmosphere. It's intense, loud, all around the ground and hostile. Obviously some of the fans took it too far at the end, but you're right we could do with Portman Road being more like this.

Re point 8 and Clarke… how much time does he need? Done very very little in his Town career to be a guaranteed starter. He needs to show some of that Sunderland sizzle and quick. And wear shorts that fit.

11. They had a huge American flag flying over their main stand. Not a good look.

Huge momentum in the fan base at St Andrews

And as mentioned all the fans seem to be active in the game and supporting

Obviously a Friday night helps, but it’s going to be full every match, and it’s going to be intimidating and I can see it becoming quite the fortress and earning Brum quite a few points

Horrible place to go, Portman Road needs to fire up… it has a few times in the double promotion seasons

I would love to have seen how Cajuste would have coped with last night. I know the common feeling is that he’s going to boss this division. I’m not so sure…Obviously hope the majority are right.
