20 fouls committed by Saints vs our 7, lucky to get out of that game 17:09 - Aug 17 with 767 viewsunstableblue

… without any serious injuries, especially this early in the season.

Although Szmodics and Azor looked like they’d had some serious knocks

Ref was poor. Gave fouls but too slow to show a card which meant the fouls continued. Then booked Taylor for dissent after give a noonsense decision against him. At least his comedy fall midway through the first half made me chuckle

Not surprised at those numbers, Madeley could have had a card out much sooner & saved himself a lot of grief!
I thought their breaking up of play was at the expense of chancing a yellow but took ages to come.

Yes. A lot of those fouls were not during attacking moves or in threatening areas of the pitch, hence the reason the ref did not punish them more severely, with yellows, but Southampton knew what they were doing - stopping us from gaining any momentum. It worked to a large extent!

Very hard to open up space with quick passing, if the third pass ends in a clog from behind every time.

Was cynical and effective.

They were absolutely filthy, non stop just coming through the back of us, on top of that two of our fouls weren't fouls, being the ones we actually got booked for!

Back in the early 70’s Bill Shankly called them an “alehouse football team” after they had kicked his team to bits. I was there, as a 13 year old, and the challenges made everyone shudder.

The Matusiwa yellow was for a shirt pull. It was a strict interpretation of the rule to give a yellow card. Armstrong didn't need to go down but felt the shirt being pulled and did so. He and Downes were very fortunate not to be carded as was Wellington shortly before he did get his.

Taylor's booking was for the dissent that followed the foul being given rather than for the foul itself.
