It’s not really his game, I don’t think it ever will be. He’s industrious and off the ball his work is good, at times tonight it was very good. I don’t think he’s ever going to be one who has that raw ability like Philogene & Clarke do, or Omari. He’s a different profile and that’s fine. We need a balance and the water carriers in there. Not to say he doesn’t have quality, but he’s not really your X factor type of player and I don’t think he’s as technically strong on the ball as others. I like McAteer as a footballer though, a good age and good experience, the sort of player who will rarely put in a sub 6/10 performance but equally probably not a 9 or 10 either. I’d have him my squad, my only slight gripe which I thought when he signed and still believe now is he was about £5m too expensive but that’s not on him and probably more a reflection of the market and who we signed him from. I think he’ll have a solid season.

Him having a wild pot shot ends up causing enough trouble to lead to Clarke scoring the fifth. Really enjoyed how direct he was.

I think the McAteer signing has all the hallmarks of a McKenna inspired signing. Good age, experience and very good physical profile for the role he will be asked to play in this system. Reminds me a bit of when we signed Hirst, underwhelming in terms of stats but was an excellent fit in terms of physical profile and McKenna has got a tune out of him and McAteer looks like the long terms replacement for Burns, so a few more weeks and months we will hopefully see some more consistency and better decision making etc.

Completely agree, he’s very Burns like off the ball. You can see why McKenna trusted Burns when fit, he barely missed a beat out of possession and his positional discipline and work rate was bob on. McAteer has a lot of that about him, hopefully some of that offensive output can come in time as well.

He's definitely got a role to play... Keeps the oppo' stretched when we're in transition. Got a feeling he'll be one that's missed when not in the matchday squad. Even if he's a little less spectacular on the eye. He's an honest grafter. Every squad needs them.
