I hope we aren’t going full press in the PL 21:53 - Aug 4 with 1092 viewsitfcsuth

I must say, I hope we don’t go full press in the Premier League, would fear for us if that is GON plan, we’d be butchered 4-0 every week.

Would have, and we may still might, go a much more resolute defensive counter attacking side this year, would be somewhat naive to think we can just go and full press the Prem teams as a newly promoted side, will be opened up most week.

I’ve said it before, 3-4-2-1 with the ball, 5-4-1 against it, have to show a level of intelligence with our approach this year to stay in the division.

Its clear we try different things in different games/halves in these friendlies

Tonight at times we pressed high. Sometimes we sat back

Hirst coming on for example.. he held position on halfway at times
Compare to emmerson who was halfway in opponents half and mehmeti joing him etc

Can definately see we are learning that theres more ways to skin a cat

You don’t think O’Neil might have already considered that, and plans to have a different game plan for each opponent. He’s already said he’d have us play very differently at the Etihad compared to lesser opponents at PM.

I’d be disappointed if we didn’t have a variety of approaches, and definitely take the game to the opponents in some games.

It is true games have different phases and moments in them, but I’m yet to see that too much beyond a full press once triggered.

I didn’t particularly think we sat back tonight and almost let Le Havre have the ball to test us, but I’m not sure Le Havre came with too much intent to do that to be honest.

It only flagged to me because there were a couple of moments we went with the press and it just left a gaping hole in the central area, which Le Havre really weren’t good enough to see or exploit, but the PL will be very different of course, I will also grant that we are playing without any natural defensive midfielders in there, it’s more the principle.

I’m sure he’s thought of it, but I would have thought we’d have seen some experimenting with it, phases where we’d almost let the opposition just have the ball and sucker punch, we may well do in the final 2 against tougher tests.

The reality is, beyond Coventry and Hull at home, we are going to be the lesser team in every game in the PL, and it’s our job to set us up accordingly to still get results, I’m not sure a full aggressive press is the smart play this season I must be honest, I think we could be vastly exposed.
