I think the article makes a very good point. I find it extremely tiresome when the press focus on politicians from either side of the political spectrum for their personal views or remarks they have made.
What is far more important (IMO) is what they do when they are in a position if power. There are some people who come across well but their voting record in Parliament or decisions as ministers are horrendous. Similarly there are some politicians who are complete barstewards yet have a record of doing/voting for very positive things (and there are those who hold certain personal viewpoints but appreciate that it's a personal view and vote on behalf of wider society).

I don't think it's mentioned in the article but he was also very good on race relations - far better than Kennedy.
He was aware that the stance he was taking in improving the lot of the blacks & the poor would mean the democrats would suffer major defeas in the South
