Excuse my ignorance, but what was the point of the Fixed Term Parliament Act if the government could introduce a one-line amendment anyway and call an election with a majority of 1?

Theoretically, yes.
But this is an extremely unusual situation, where smaller opposition parties are prepared to cooperate with a struggling minority government desperate for an election when the main Oppositon aren't. It wasn't really forseen.
IMO there are lots of problems with FTPA2011. I wasn't in favour at the time. |  |

It does at least fix the issue of the government of the day being able to pick and choose the best time for themselves. In that respect the FTPA is working well. |  |
