Fixed Term Parliament Act 14:12 - Oct 29 with 879 views | Mookamoo | Excuse my ignorance, but what was the point of the Fixed Term Parliament Act if the government could introduce a one-line amendment anyway and call an election with a majority of 1? I know Boris needs support this time, but couldn't any government with a majority do that at any point?
Fixed Term Parliament Act on 14:30 - Oct 29 with 847 views | Guthrum | Theoretically, yes. But this is an extremely unusual situation, where smaller opposition parties are prepared to cooperate with a struggling minority government desperate for an election when the main Oppositon aren't. It wasn't really forseen. IMO there are lots of problems with FTPA2011. I wasn't in favour at the time.

It does at least fix the issue of the government of the day being able to pick and choose the best time for themselves. In that respect the FTPA is working well.
