He's brilliant, he can do everything. He's made a significant contribution to this win in every department, batting, bowling and catches win matches. He could bat out a day or score a hundred in 70 balls then bowl a 10 over spell at 90 MPH a few hours later.

I'll add this one here as well, captures the drama - and frustration - of yesterday rather well:

It's taken him some time to get there but wow.

His fitness is supreme and shows just how important fitness and conditioning matter.
His mental conditioning is also to be admired.

Love his game

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

The one thing I hope they don't do is make him Captain.

It runs the risk of taking away all of his freedom to just play and the extra responsibility may just overload him. He would be a great leader, yes. But asking him to be commander and administrator as well in not, IMO, really his skillset. He is Achilles, not Agamemnon.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Agreed, Botham struggled as Captain, A better bet for captain if Root is injured or ever wants to concentrate on batting might be Burns, one of the few in the team who has actually captained at county level, wouldn't be surprised if Butler is also a candidate, he is Morgan's deputy in ODI.

And another piece on Test openers:

The whole list of players England have tried since 2012 takes some time, although the run of Boycott, Gooch, Atherton, Trescothick, Strauss and Cook is a mightily impressive one.

I think it's probably impossible to rank them & perhaps better not to try - different eras & different pressures etc. Both just brilliant really.

He's best leading by example and giving his thoughts to the Captain.

The best player is rarely the best Captain

It would ruin him like it has many before.

Nobody comes close to Both.

He would have an hours sleep after a night on the lash, have a fag, and take 5 wickets.
Derek Pringle's recent book has a few funny stories about Both.

Different era. So much has changed.
