Can the football world stop speculating about when football will return please. 14:10 - Apr 11 with 565 viewsTheonlywayisup

I have found it incredible that from the start of this there have been meetings and discussions in the media on when football will return.

It just doesn't make sense as when this will be will be at a time when this is over and no one knows the answer to that. Even behind closed door matches won't happen until there is a cure or a vaccine. So how can there be any idea at all when football will return?

Personally I think it will beyond the end of 2020 before we see a game again and at least a year until fans are watching in stadiums.

Just doesn't sit well with me all this talk when in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter anyway.

Stating the obvious, but it is all about money. Without which most if not all clubs are insolvent and could go out of business. You are also not going to see the government rushing to financially help the bigger clubs, especially the Premier League. Politically much too toxic.

No matches means effectively little or no revenue. TV monies, sponsorship, match day revenues are all impacted. If the season does not finish then Premiership clubs are reportedly going to lose 1 billion pounds in tv income alone.

Yet they all have huge financial commitments in the form of player salaries and we know that players are not going to give those contracts up.

Premier League clubs have been swimming in cash for many years and few seem to have built up a rainy day fund. Instead most appear to spend everything they have got to chase the dream or avoid the drop. The football business model in the top leagues has been an accident waiting to happen for years.

If we have social distancing for the next 18 months until a vaccine is developed, then we are going to see a lot of clubs go out of business including at the top end of the game. The idea that football can go on behind closed doors is a sign of their desperation rather than a practical or realistic option.

This is where ME’s more prudent approach may pay dividends. It has always seemed possible that a big club will implode. No-one anticipated the current situation but the whole Sky / EPL edifice could wobble - and then.....? I wonder if we might have more chance of survival than some of the big boys, although that might depend on what happens to ME’s empire.

This almost sounds like the justifications given for Lambert's 'Lambingo' policy...

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.
