Might not be what we want to hear in the middle of the Covid-19 epidemic but I found this a profound read, not just about Belsen but about the difficulty that a young soldier had when he came home.

Poll: What was in Wes Burns' imaginary cup of tea ?

not quite the same but my grandad was one of the first British soldiers to enter Changi POW camp in Singapore after the Japanese left, and that affected him for the rest of his life. One of the prisoners gave him an elephant carved from a grain of rice which we still have

My paternal Grandad was one of the early officers to enter Belsen (possibly in the same regiment as this chap, as he was a Logistics Officer in a Tank Regiment) and couldn't believe that anyone could do that - my Dad said that when he came back from the war (and went to work as a manager in British Rail) he used to say thank God we won, otherwise he dreaded to think what could have happened...

You are the obsolete SRN4 to my Fairey Rotodyne....

My grandad was amongst those who liberated Belsen. Think he was in the infantry at that point. (Earlier he was in the SOE).

I dont remember much of him but my mum told me how he would break down if he tried to talk about it. I went there in the late 90s when visiting Hohne, a British army base. Is a very errie place, huge mounds where 1000s were buried and literally no birds. Humbling and upsetting place to visit.

75th anniversary of the camp's liberation today (which I guess is why it's in the news)
