1: Casino Royale (Craig version) 2: From Russia with Love 3: On Her Majesty's Secret Service 4: The Living Daylights 5: Goldeneye
Numbers 4 and 5 were tricky:
- Living Daylights perhaps holds a greater affection for me than the film merits, partly because it was the first Bond film I saw in the cinema as a 12 year old, and also because it was such a blessed relief not to have Moore hamming it up anymore (taking nothing away from the 70s Bond films with Moore in, but he really should have retired after For Your Eyes Only).
- Goldeneye edges Skyfall for me simply because of the many many hours of fun I had playing the N64 game.
Until Craig came along I didn't think anything would top From Russia with Love in my eyes - in fact even typing this sentence is making me question my order!!
FRWL sets such a high standard, it's the first time Q appears, Rosa Klebb is just proper nasty, SPECTRE gets more fleshing out than in Dr No and Daniela Bianchi is IMO the most beautiful Bond girl of all (she couldn't speak a word of English and was overdubbed).
Many critics have Goldfinger above FRWL, but I think that it is because Goldfinger is more quotable ("No Mr Bond, I expect you to Die", "My name is Pussy Galore; I must be dreaming", "Shocking"). It's not bad, but I found the Fort Knox plot average and fantastical compared to the defection plot of FRWL.
