...using a search engine of your choice. When you search for whatever you are looking for just add (-site:amazon.co.uk) to the end.

Also, for books this has just launched which will allow people to buy books online and still use their local bookshop (if they've set up a page).

Good bit of coding but there is always an alternative to buying from Amazon, buy fro an actual person who lives locally and either makes gifts or know someone else locally who makes gifts (hopefully sourced locally or at least responsibly). I have not bought anything from Amazon in years.

Also helps to alienate friends and family during autumn so that you can reduce your carbon footprint by having almost no one to buy presents for. And then at the most miserable time of the year you can put on a facade of wanting reconciliation when they are at their most vulnerable...

Very good idea this. Lots of people have turned to making various gifts/sweets etc during lockdown and there is some good bits to be had on Facebook/Gumtree etc.

Very hard not to use the likes of amazon sometimes for certain items. Tried a local photography shop near my house for an SD Card and it was nearly 3 times the price of Amazon or eBay.

Amazon may usually be cheaper than a High Street shop but only if you know exactly what you want. I needed a new charger for my phone because the one supplied just nine months previously with a new phone started to work intermittently and then failed completely. John Lewis, of all people, told me that it was not covered by a guarantee as it was not part of the phone! I was unsure exactly where the fault lay so took the cable into a phone shop and the guy checked out both cable and plug for me, found the fault in the cable and sold me a new one for £7.50. OK, I might have been able to get one online for a couple of quid but I appreciated an end to the uncertainty, I was walking past the shop anyway so there was no additional post and packing, also I got the technical (which I know was straightforward and I should have been able to figure out for myself as I had a spare plug) thrown in.

Or tell people that as neither you nor they are practising Christians, celebrating this religious festival would be inappropriate.
