If the Chairman thinks it, most probably others in the FA do as well. Total embarrassment.

I have some sympathy with him around the "coloured" comment. I often hear over 60s using that sort of language, as these were the terms they used when growing up - it's a bit like using the word Centigrade instead of Celsius, there is no malicious intent it is just what they are used to.

Having sex with anyone (or thing) is a lifestyle choice but in the context of men's football I'd say there is still significant homophobia. I'm not sure that it's a football "problem", I still think a broad section of society is "uncomfortable" with the concept.

The lazy racial stereotypes are rather hard to defend...

Credit his decision to step down, you can't be the change if you don't understand why, or that, it's needed.

It is all his comments and the fact he had been warned before. Agree it isn't just a football thing, but the head of an association who are trying to change mindset, makes him a complete berk. (burk).

Bloke's nearly ten years younger than my dad. My dad cottoned on to the fact that 'coloured' wasn't acceptable any more some time around 1997 and he's a Suffolk bloke who's basically lived his whole life in the same village.
If he can get his head round it, I'm pretty sure that the a bloke from Leicester who's chairman of an organisation representing a massively multicultural sport can.

Altho, as a public figure heading a significant national organisation*, he really ought to know better and pick his words more carefully when he speaks.

* One for which racism, homophobia, etc., have been conscious issues for longer than most.

Totally agree about age being a factor. I'm 64 and find it all a bit of a minefield tbh!
I completely get that the gay remark and 'girlie goalkeeper' remarks were wrong but to lose your job for using the term 'coloured footballers' seems way OTT.

This morning The Guardian refers to Kamala Harris as a 'woman of colour'
Why is that acceptable but 'coloured footballers' isn't? Would 'footballers of colour' have been OK?
I'm genuinely confused.

The use of 'coloured' can be a difficult one to pass judgement on, Benedict Cumberbatch got in trouble for it when he was 39.:

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2015/jan/26/benedict-cumberbatch-apologises-

One of the issues that should be borne in mind is how the term was used in apartheid South Africa as a way of grading (and degrading people), to that end I am a bit mystified why 'person of colour' is considered okay. So I tend to stick with black and white (and am then prepared to ask if anyone knows of anyone who is truly and completely black or white if challenged...), but I would avoid saying yellow or even oriental - despite having great difficulty in telling a Chinese (and that nation embraces a great many different looks) from a Japanese from a Korean from a Vietnamese.
