Throughout this the Welsh government have been ahead of Boris and Co. The messaging has been much clearer and the lock down observed by most. For example we were never advised to return to offices.

I think they got it wrong after the firebreak (and they've been criticised for it) but aside from that much clearer and stricter.

Agreed but...did they not talk about how good the fire break was? When it clearly wasn't.

It made like sense to lift it just as England entered enhanced restrictions.

Scotland will be applying their tier 3 rules from Boxing Day. Strict travel restrictions to the rest of the UK.

Schools will be online only learning from week beginning 11th. Children could return to class on the 18th (subject to review). We could have another U-turn in England to the current plans for primary schools to return along with a staggered return for secondary schools.

The decision to exit the firebreak was taken well before Boris decided on the England restrictions. The Welsh government had committed to the firebreak finishing on a specific date, something that they couldn't really go back on.

The problem was afterwards. Before the firebreak we'd gone from the original lockdown (things opened up 3-4 weeks after England) to a series of local lockdowns restricting movement and legally enforced. With national restrictions people moved around. City centre was packed, people hopping over the bridge for a night out in Cardiff to escape the English restrictions. Basically it was almost normal.

And here we are.....8 of the 10 areas with the biggest infection rates in the UK are in south Wales, with the first minister last weekend stating the NHS in Wales might need to be renamed the 'National Coronavirus Service'.
