Messi 644 no... 07:11 - Dec 23 with 1083 views | Tangledupin_Blue | Lionel Messi has scored his 644th goal for Barcelona passing Pele's record of 643 for Santos. Messi is 33 so has time to score a few more, yet. That is astonishing. (Apologies if covered elsewhere).

And all down the years the idea of Pele's record being beaten was beyond comprehension. It could never happen. Now here we are.

Is there any complete record of all Peles goals? It's always said he scored over 1000 goals, but lve never really seen any proof? We have records for Messi, but lm not sure there are for Pele. It's only ever been word of mouth. I always doubt the fact he scored all those.

Maybe he counted goals scored playing the Brazilian version of Wembley when he was 13?

I imagine he was pretty good when he was 13 too as he was scoring goals in World Cup Final when he was 17. [Post edited 23 Dec 2020 10:46]

I read, years ago, that Pele scored more than 1200 goals but that this total includes some from when he was in the Brazilian army, scored against other army or air force teams. And a few hundred of his goals were scored in exhibition matches from when Santos went on money-making tours playing three or four times a week.

and I think three of them have since been ruled out by VAR.

But that's the same as Messi in terms of the many weak teams Barca have played in the Champions league ie Celtic , but all goals count | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Murphy was actually played in position by Mick McCarthy and partnered well, whereas for some reason Jewell had him wide all the time chasing balls and not getting in front of goal where it mattered.

The exhibition matches which Pele played were, in essence, friendlies. I don't think Messi's stat includes such goals. Pele also scored a spectacular goal for a POW team against the German national team. Not sure whether that counts as 'friendly' but lucky the cameras were there else it might have been forgotten about in the mists of time.
