England v Scotland yesterday on 10:43 - Feb 7 with 692 views | Darth_Koont | Just watched that again to see if it’s a fair reflection and the answer is not really. It’s certainly a bit unfair as this came at the end of a sequence where they’d had ball in hand and were running at Scotland, backs as well as forwards. And the freeze frame doesn’t take into account Maitland was running up to defend/spoil any pass to a flat back line, and players that are too tight to the touch line to really exploit the overlap. The Scottish defence will slide across here so it’s never going to be 7 v 3 in a meaningful sense. But they have numbers to exploit the space Maitland left behind. The kick was on – and this was England and Farrell’s problem all day – but the execution was poor and the kick was too long to Hogg (who was also covering out of frame). I actually think Eddie Jones was pretty accurate in his post-game assessment and when he bristled against the journalists who were glibly asking why England didn’t run it more. Well, because they were starved of possession and territory and whenever they had the ball, Scotland’s quick defensive line took away the space. The real problem was not tactical so much as execution, and they put pressure on themselves through penalties, being edged out in the set piece that is their foundation, edged out at the breakdowns and losing the kicking battle. Scotland dominated the game as a result. Similar in a way to how England dominated the game against New Zealand in the World Cup. And in that game, New Zealand ran from everywhere and made massive ground with the ball in hand. But it wasn’t enough because they couldn’t pressure in the danger areas. England v Scotland yesterday on 14:21 - Feb 7 with 560 views | BlueForYou | That is what's known as a walk in! A butchered 7 points, the game right there! There is a clear 6-2 overlap outside. That was never a kicking situation. Farrell is a very poor fly half, always has been. They try to shoehorn him in for his goalkicking. George Ford, Joe Simmonds, Marcus Smith, all would have walked that try in! Terrible Rugby by England. If you kick ball in hand, you either kick into space, kick into touch, or kick where your wingers can retrieve it, otherwise keep the ball..!! England's constant kick it away tactic is aimless, pointless, & all it achieves is to hand possession & territory to the opposition. It is negative. We are so much better than that. Jones needs to wake up, stop selecting Saracens players who aren't match sharp, select players on form...... Or Go! [Post edited 7 Feb 2021 14:46]
