Evening picture thread: Mount Etna on 22:08 - Feb 17 with 1793 views | catch74 | Very lucky to go up Mount Etna shortly after it had erupted. Would have been early 80’s. Very 80’s H&S in that there was none. From the hair raising bus journey there, to shoes melting on the not completely cooled lava flow to being able to being able to walk up as close as you dared to a hole with flowing lava at the bottom. The guide did throw a branch into it first, which was ablaze before it got any where near. It’s an incredible sight and that footage is truly awesome.

I almost posted some photos of Scottish lochs from the BBC site earlier. They seem a bit tame now. If you threw a stick in one of those you'd get a gentle splash.

I’d choose Scottish locks over that bus ride again. Get those pics up, bet they’re stunning.

Nah, you should have done. We need something to offset the general misery on here at the moment.

Evening picture thread: Mount Etna on 09:03 - Feb 18 with 1547 views | Coastalblue | I loved Sicily, had an amazing time there and can't wait to be able to go back. Turns out our next door neighbours own a house there that has been offered for a stay if we'd like, will definitely be taking them up on that. I even got the hang of the driving, eventually.

"I even got the hang of the driving, eventually." Just being insanely aggressive? [Post edited 18 Feb 2021 9:07]

Pretty much yeah, but it's a bit more subtle than that in that everybody expects you to be insanely agressive and allows for that. It's a long, long way from my natural driving style but it got so much easier when I drove like an 4rsehole and all the locals were happeir with me too I believe, they knew what to expect and anticipate. You stop at a junction, signal. check mirrors, wait for gap, be polite, they don't know how to cope and their brains melt. Barge your way out and everybody honks their horn and is happy.

Proper jealous! Closest I've been is when I got to the top of Villarrica early last year, managed to see some smoke and smell the ash, but nothing more. Sounds awesome. Guessing changes in attitude to H&S will make it near impossible for us mere mortals to experience what you did :-(

Makes you want to teleport there doesn't it. Stick up a tent, wrap up, pour a glass or 2 of the local moonshine. Get a fire/bbq on the go. Maybe take a rod and see what's for lunch in the lake.

Big time. One of the difficulties of visiting the area is the lack of cheap accommodation. But of course one of the attractions of visiting the area is the lack of cheap accommodation :-) I've briefly looked at roof tents as a compromise (to a camper) and or tenting which seems like a nice way to go...Just getting too old for life without a shower!

Torridon Youth Hostel is pretty good, great location too. https://www.hostellingscotland.org.uk/hostels/torridon/ Although I was there the week after the Scottish government had banned indoor drinking so couldn't do a great deal in the evenings! They did get permission to sell alcohol again though.

Cheers, Funnily enough I joined the YHA a couple of years ago. Far from impressed on a couple of fronts:- All the decent locations like Snowdonia seem to get booked up by schools and so can be really hard to find anything available. And last year due to CV they seem to have stopped bookings unless you book the whole room (at 3 times the cost) Minor inconvenience when all things considered but hopefully things will get back to normal at some point.
