I've confirmed three things this week:
Lateral flow tests can return false negatives so don't assume you are clear of Covid if you return a negative test.
You can still catch Covid when you have been vaccinated (although no symptoms just yet and I am pretty sure I wont develop any) so keep up social distancing for the time being.
If you talk about this on twitter people can be right C**ts
Original post below for reference I've edited the above to be clearer in what I was saying. Apologies that people thought I was scaremongering.

If you talk misleading, scaremongering crap, people are going to correct you, yes. Sometimes, if you're being particularly belligerent and ignorant about it, you'll get a more 'robust response'.
I'll settle for correcting and downvoting you for starters and we'll see where we go shall we?
The false positive rate is much, much, much lower than the false negative rate.
As is the 'you can still catch covid if you've been vaccinated' rate - no vaccine is ever 100% effective. Covid is one of the better ones, flu jabs generally offer 50-60% coverage.

Okay to be clear
I am fully in favour of vaccination.
I completely agree about the false positive rate but the false negative rate causes real problems with people thinking they don't have Covid and then go around spreading it about.
The C**ts i was talking about took exception to me pointing out that even if you have been vaccinated you need to be careful to follow social distancing for the time being.
Apologies if my intentions weren't clear but maybe don't leap to conclusions.

The false positive rate of a lateral flow is less than 1%, compared to an average of 20-25% false negatives.

They are useful for picking up asymptomatic cases that would otherwise have been missed but pointless for confirming you don't have Covid. In my case I had a positive PCR test then took a lateral flow at home out of curiosity which came back negative.
I've also learnt that you really need to shove the swab right up your nose. My son has all the symptoms but returned a negative swab. However we let him do the test himself (dumb I know) and when we checked after he didn't think he'd put it up very far. | |

My understanding is that even with trained operators you still get about 25%-30% false negatives. I worry that they may be doing more harm than good. For example when I told my son's football coach he couldn't come to training as he had symptoms and we were waiting for a test result he offered to drop over a lateral flow test. Fortunately we stuck to our plan and stayed home but someone else could easily not have done and infected the whole team. | |

I tried to do a LF test myself and I'm fairly sure I ballsed it up.
Either that or I am the luckiest man in the world who managed to avoid getting Covid whilst living with someone who had it. Or and just do happened to get a cold at exactly the same time. |  |
