What we all need now is the Patented Unstable Model… SO HERE GOES 10:47 - Aug 15 with 569 viewsunstableblue

As the board fractures, as people run screaming from the burning building that is Project Cook Transformation, we need a common language, a peerless and robust model that can analyse how the new Ipswich are progressing….

So here goes, a soothing balm, a rallying banner for us all…

IPSWICH’S ULTIMATE SUCCESS IN 21/222 WILL COME FROM

1. HAVING THE BETTER PLAYERS

Well we all know the old squad was moribund, weak. Our new leaders promised us massive change and a much higher standard. And it feels it’s coming to fruition. 16, SIXTEEN, new players. Most seem like a big upgrade, Evans, Harper, Burns, Coulson, Fraser, Edmundson, Edwards and Piggot seem like big improvements. BUT 3 have yet to play, and another centre back is still incoming. AND we’ve only seen them play twice. TWICE. Yesterday, seemingly a much weaker Burton set of players looked better for large parts of the game, a legacy player in KVY is massively underperforming. Also to make things worse as the squad building is only just about to finish Cool still doesn’t know his best 11. CONCLUSION - we are on paper strong on this model attribute, but it is still in a huge state of flux and settling.

2. WANT TO WIN THE MATCH MORE THAN THE OPPOSITION

What is our new motto again? ‘Run towards adversity’ or something?! We’ll currently we are failing on this measure - and by that I mean showing the more energy, winning the second ball, grabbing moments and making them count. Moments against Morecombe, none more so than the second goal. Elements of sustained attack against Newport. Sporadic at best yesterday. Looking at attribute 1 we hoped to bring in players like Evans who would grab games, and in part he did against Morecombe - but no Burton. Burton seemingly wanted it more, they raised their game.
CONCLUSION: this model attribute is looking wobbly, BUT, it’s only two league games. We need confidence, for that builds energy and desire. BUT, Cook must create the mind set, the culture, to do this. The new leadership have talked a lot about it. Cheltenham give us another chance. But the worry is that if the fans turn, the heads of the players will drop. This is all exasperated by the fact teams are simply going to play up against us and at PR

3. HAVE THE BETTER SYSTEM
We know what Cook wants to play, we know his preferred method and shape/system. This is where the gelling comes in, within his system partnerships are required, none more so that in full back to wide midfielder, and centre backs (who are required to be robust). KVY and Penney are not firing and this is inhibiting the system. Burns and Chaplin losses have stalled its implementation. CONCLUSION: we’ve yet to see Cooks plan fully implemented and it’s rightly a cause for concern, is there a plan B? BUT after two league games of brand new players, hit already by 4 key injuries, can you really judge? Coulson and Edwards will be preferred to make the key width work have yet to play on the same pitch!? The number 10 shape has yet to even be fully tried in my view.

In SUMMARY - early days, huge risk, confidence key, question marks on Cook, BUT squad incredibly green, too early to PANiC and let that transfer to squad confidence!!

Actually, our single biggest issue is conceding a fairly early goal, putting us on the back foot for the remainder of the game.

Fixing that one will immediately put us in a much stronger position.

Thanks Guthrum, an excellent use case for the model and also a great insight to a major early issue into the season.

Simple question - is this easily fixed?

HAVE WE GOT THE BETTER PLAYERS
The issue is quite simple - we will replace 3 of our current starting defenders. So how can we judge the effectiveness of the defence and it’s ability to give cheap goals and errors?! Also KVY is currently out of form and losing ball upfield. A quick fix is better form from KVY, Wolf and Penney whilst in the team. But put simply our wide defenders ARE second best currently and are error strewn.

WANT TO WIN THE GAME MORE (HAVE THE HIGHER ENERGY)
This is the concern, KVY, Penney are simply not grabbing the game, not displaying enough tenacity and energy. The Wolf has shown some of his lethargy. Donacien in a way has shown the most desire in his games. Cook has a role in firing them up, but let’s face it for those saying ‘oh we have to beat Morecombe or Burton’ well this almost assumes they aren’t going to turn up fired up. Burton first half simply wanted it more.

HAVE THE BETTER SYSTEM
With regard defensive fragility this is where Cook has most chance of influencing. It’s quite simple, goals are coming from errors and positional issues out wide. The 4-2-3-1 hasn’t landed yet… the full backs are expected to bomb forward combine with the wide midfielders and overload out wide, BUT due to their form they are allowing turnovers and attackers are getting past them, the central midfielders have pressed forward and we’re getting exposed. Also there is cheap turnover centrally as the 10 isn’t linking well with the central midfield. In short we need to tighten the system. But that might reduce our effectiveness going forward.

To summarise - a temporary fix of system, better form from current players is required, whilst we slowly bed in the 3 new defenders.
