Great but sad article about Laurie Cunningham 08:00 - Oct 14 with 947 viewsgtsb1966

I never realised he had such an unhappy last few years of life. I vaguely remember him playing. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58822497

I remember Cunningham's comments on racial abuse. He said the worst was when he was a teenager, playing for Orient Reserves in the old London Midweek League. He said this was particularly prevalent at places like Peterborough & Cambridge, where a black man or player was a rarity & you could hear the abuse because those games were lucky to attract a crowd of a few hundred.

There was very good documentary on Cunningham, Batson & Regis on tv not so long ago (could have been Black History Month last year)

Believe it was on BBC, so could well be on iPlayer. Will try and find a link…

Edit: couldn’t find it on iPlayer or itv hub, but believe this is it, First Among Equals - The Laurie Cunningham Story

Always remember an emotional Laurie Cunningham interview after his Wimbledon team beat Luton 2-1 in the FA Cup semi final of the FA Cup in 1988.

He mentioned the game that haunted him the most in his career was the Ipswich FA Cup semi final defeat that took place ten years beforehand in 1978 (near enough to the day) and felt relief that he may finally get to play in a FA Cup final. Something he always dreamed about. Thankfully he did by coming on as substitute against Liverpool & winning a FA Cup medal.

Sadly he passed away a little over a year later

I was living in Madrid for part of the time he was playing for Real Madrid. Came across him a few times in bars that were used by the ex-pat community. He was pretty quiet and not at all flash.
