Doing a bit of research on the 1956/57 season.... 08:19 - Nov 23 with 685 viewsITFC_nostalgia

.....and noticed the last time we won the third tier (admittedly the South version) we were 12th on 1st December after almost half the games. Let's hope there's some sort of parallel this season.

We won 5 games and drew one in April and on the 1st of May we won 2-0 at Southampton and won the League on goal average my uncle scoring the second goal.

Two of those wins were against Norwich 👍👏👏👏

Looking at the results we were pretty unstoppable from Boxing Day onwards. Two league losses, both towards the end of March, and a handful of draws - all bar one away. Let's hope, as you say, it's an omen.

All we need is a 42 goal striker, clearly! :)

Another factor is that these days those at the top, and in the playoff places tend to do better than in the 56/57 season. Adjusting for 3 points for a win vs 2, Town won that division with the equivalent of 84 points. That's only enough to win the modern League One maybe once a decade, if that.

But certainly, if we can improve consistently on the pitch, the playoffs are not beyond us. Let's see whether Cook can make that happen...

I notice that the New York Times, no less, led the story with this:

IPSWICH TOWN ADVANCES; Beats Southampton Team, 2-0, in English Soccer Match

And so we did advance - for the next half century, anyway!

Being nosey (or possibly interested) was your uncle Basil Acres or Jimmy Leadbetter?

Basil Acres he was unlucky to get an injury which finished his career so missed out playing in the first division the year Town won it.

Thanks, Westover. '56/'57 was the year before I started coming to Ipswich from Herts. The dad of a school friend of mine was an ITFC supporter and he started taking me as well as his son.

I certainly saw your uncle play a few times the following season.
