It’s not like South America where Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay pretty much dominate year on year, or Europe with Spain, Italy, Germany & France.

It’s more like women’s tennis, where the top 6 one year will be completely different the next time you look.

The great World Cup performances of past sides such as Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana & Ivory Coast are always pretty much one offs.
Look at Burkino Faso as the equivalent of Sofia Kenin, Iva Majoli or Emma Raducanu.

To be perfectly honest, and purely down to my own ignorance, I had little idea that they were even a country until relatively recently, and yet they have been so called since 1984 apparently. I put the 'Burk' in Burkina Faso then.

Yep AFCON can be pretty mad. Egypt won 3 in a row between 2006 and 2010, then didn’t qualify for the next two tournaments. Burkina Faso are probably a team you’d expect to get to the last 16 but no further - probably the equivalent of someone like Poland or Switzerland getting to the semis of the Euros. A bit of a shock but nobody would call you bonkers for predicting them as a dark horse.
