Environment agency need a name change! on 13:06 - Feb 6 with 722 views | brogansnose | There are two sides to the EA. One is the ecological and bio-diversity side and the other is the flood defence side which always trumps the bio-diversity side. In this case it would have been easier to just say no to building on flood plain.
Environment agency need a name change! on 13:10 - Feb 6 with 714 views | Swansea_Blue | That should result in charges of criminal damage. It probably won’t even help with flood risk - maybe just push the risk further downstream. [Post edited 6 Feb 2022 13:10]

It has to be noted too that the EA are under pressure to carry out this sort of work which they themselves know is out dated and ultimately ineffectual. For the EA it's politically more effective, as a government body - no do as we say then no funding - to dig, dredge and cut back trees which, as you say, simply moves the problem along. Meandering rivers with adjacent floodplains and trees hold up high water events which is far preferable than dredged and widened rivers acting as a fast conduit to the next obstacle. I say it again, don't build on floodplains but unfortunately these areas have lovely views and houses on them can be sold at a premium.

To be fair, that bit of river is heavily canalised already and is where it disgorges from the town into the floodplain (Somerset Levels) beyond. Edit: I know Taunton a bit. [Post edited 6 Feb 2022 16:06]

Agreed… from an ea geomorphologist clearly on the environmental side. The grant in aid for environmental work has halved under the tories over the last decade Flood defence engineering England ltd is what we are morphing into unfortunately [Post edited 6 Feb 2022 17:56]
