I remember a decade ago celebrating theyd actually stopped it for a few months just for the 2012 Olympics :)

It's been a thing for at least 25 years, I remember having to get buses at the weekends mid 90s to get to London, because of engineering works, actually wasnt as annoying then as the bus went direct to Liverpool St, none of this change and get on the tube or random station in Essex stuff.

But theres probably another decade worth at least of work, track replacement and overhead line replacement (much of it approaching 40 years old) north of Ipswich hasnt been touched. And theyve not tackled any of the things that might make the route better, ie Haughley junction, Trowse swingbridge, Chelmsford viaduct, take out some of the level crossings etc etc.

Amazing really.
Would kill me if I lived in Suffolk and had to travel regularly with London or get the train every other week to PR

Was about to post about the forth bridge in jest. Kind of makes sense.

By the time they have finished the track they replaced in the mid-90s will need replacing again.

The main trouble is that in most places it’s only a single line in each direction so if they want to do any work they have to close the whole line. Works happen up and down the country every weekend, but it’s because we have such a narrow line that it gets so disrupted. It’s the equivalent of us having the A140 the whole way to london…. It’s an A road but single carriageway and a right old pain.
