Stockport County 21:46 - Mar 22 with 1471 viewsdominiciawful

Have won 19 out of their last 20 matches.

That's rather impressive.

10 points clear of Chestefield (who lost tonight) with a game in hand.

Work colleague is a massive County fan. He really thought there was no way at all they could reel Chesterfield back in. Then Cookie was appointed.

He'll be very happy tonight, albeit with Covid.

Stockport County appear a club in a very strong position, both on and off the pitch, they are one of a few clubs at that level paying out serious money.

Its been a remarkable transformation. New owners acquired the club not long ago and have been willing to invest heavily. They brought in a new manager (Simon Rusk) in January 2021 who conducted something of a revolution with many of the stalwarts of the National League North title winning team relegated out of the first 11 and new players coming in. Fans became disgruntled with the style of play, particularly the fact that Rusk seemed incapable of making tactical changes during games. He only had plan A. The new players actually seemed to be getting steadily worse.

Some fans, including me (I’m Town by birth and County by adoption after moving up here 40 years ago), wanted Rusk gone in the summer. But most said that when the new guy had a full pre-season with the new players it would be much better. Roll on to this season and the decline continued. Still no plan B, no intervention when games were going against us and players getting worse not better. Fans became toxic and after two defeats to lesser teams Rusk was sacked.

Dave Challinor was appointed and here’s the remarkable thing. The 19 out of 20 has been achieved with the same players (except guess what, players from before Rusk who had been written off have come back as key players whose form has been tremendous). Those same players suddenly seem world beaters (at our level anyway). It’s like he has signed an entirely new team. Except of course he hasn’t.

The manager makes changes when the game isn’t going well (0-2 at HT last Saturday and by the end 4-2 and could easily have been 6-2) and gives really insightful analysis in interviews unlike the last guy who talked a lot and said nothing.

Any of this sound familiar?

By the way — if you didn’t see the televised 5-3 vs Bolton in the cup you missed a treat. The atmosphere in the ground and the comeback from 1-3 to 5-3 remined me of great nights under the lights at PR in my youth (the 2-1 vs Arsenal early in the Robson era being my standout. The only time I can ever remember not being able to hear myself in the Churchman’s that was transformed from its usual torpor to a cauldron of noise as Baxter and Clarke turned the game round)

20 out of 20 for Ipswich Wanderers though

As for Cook, he sure has derailed his career. Fair play for going back to Chesterfield but given the position they were in, it was a high risk scenario.

Poll: An interesting day for our politicians, but which one is worse?
