Surely this can't be true from our guardians of the environment! 07:27 - May 24 with 1016 views | BanksterDebtSlave | https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/may/24/european-fruit-with-traces-o "The research found that 87% of pears in Belgium and 85% of those in Portugal were contaminated by at least one toxic pesticide. Close to a third of all fruits sampled were tainted by hazardous substances in 2019, the last year for which data was available to researchers. The most contaminated fruits sampled were blackberries (51%), peaches (45%), strawberries (38%), cherries (35%) and apricots (35%). For vegetables, celery (50%), celeriac (45%) and kale (31%) were the most contaminated products." [Post edited 24 May 2022 7:27]

Surely this can't be true from our guardians of the environment! on 07:33 - May 24 with 973 views | BanksterDebtSlave | And on the same theme..... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/may/23/globalisation-of-food-production-h "Globalisation of the food trade is the single most important reason for the growing hunger and poverty across the world. It removes agency from local people and places it in the hands of the giant food commodity and chemical seed companies, and the caprice of aid donors. Those who wish to remedy the situation need to address it from the other end. Amartya Sen put it succinctly three decades ago: the key reason for starvation is lack of access to food. That can be overcome only once we have moved away from the globalisation of food to food sovereignty, particularly in the poorer parts of the world. Food sovereignty should be the aim of all official and private aid donors. Food is not an industrial commodity that can be traded across the world. It is the most vital ingredient for survival."

The council sprayed an ungodly amount of weedkiller up my road the other month and left what it killed there to rot. Everything is an exercise in what’s the cheapest thing we can do without failing completely.

Fortunately none of this stuff gets into European waterways as I hear the water quality over there is to die for!

Not having raw sewage pumped into the country's waterways shouldn't be too much to ask for should it? Trying to make out it's less of a problem because of other nations not getting their house in order isn't the best direction to take really. The matter of pesticide overuse should be a concern for all of us and I shall be looking at the labels a bit more closely for a while although generally I try to stick to British grown stuff as much as possible because I can't get my head around a piece of fruit being flown from the other side of the planet. If I had my way there would be fruit trees in every public space possible with no pesticides involved. Some things shouldn't have to be paid for at all.

Wait! Issues can be addressed concurrently!? The fruit tree thing is something I've said to people in the past too. No idea why people don't do this.

I made no comment on the literal sh1t show that is our attitude to our waterways but I think it is important to acknowledge that EU-land is not the environmental land of milk and honey that others pretend it is so often on here either.

"EU-land is not the environmental land of milk and honey that others pretend it is so often on here either." Literally nobody does this and this is why there are so many arguments on here about it. You'll get someone pipe up with that angle thinking they're being clever pointing out stuff that hasn't been said or indeed even happened. Usually accompanied with a few "HA HAs, LOLs" and something about bedwetting or some other smug nonsense or other. People who feel strongly there are more benefits to being a member than not do not believe the EU is made up of higher infallible beings. It's not. But the point as ever is to do with whether one is in or outside the tent and something about urinating. I never did get the hang of that saying tbh. You may want to consider people who have been priced out of the house market through no fault of their own and so have a desire to move abroad at some point where property is affordable. For most that option has also been removed. [Post edited 24 May 2022 19:17]
