Earls Colne might look good, but it's still in Essex.

I’ve never been. But it is in that part of Essex that’s, er, less Essex. So I’m sure it’s a pleasant place. North Essex has some mighty fine parts. Dedham and Flatford, etc. Lovely.

North Essex is more “proper Essex”, not like other parts of the county which many people would consider to be “proper Essex” but which are perhaps more akin to modern stereotypes. Shame that any remaining traditional accents will probably be gone for good in the not-too-distant future.

Nice parts around here if you know where to look. Earls Colne, Coggeshall and Kelvedon have characterful buildings. Saffron Walden, Thaxted, Finchingfield, Great Bardfield and other places in the NW are quaint and picturesque. Castle Hedingham, the Colne Valley, the Stour Valley, the Dedham Vale, etc. And then all the lovely places in the south of Suffolk aren’t too far away. Clare, Cavendish, Melford are all on the border, and Lavenham and Kersey not too far.

Plus, Jaywick could be classed as being in North Essex. Surely the jewel in the crown.

When it comes to the accent , my impression is that the traditional north Essex, John Bond accent is retained by quite a lot of men, -even young men , but by very few women .
