Is Al Gore right to be optimistic? 17:56 - Aug 12 with 702 viewsNthQldITFC

Does Biden's bill actually represent some kind of political turning point?

I must admit to being sceptical that the behemoths of destructive profit-grabbing industries can be stopped, but maybe there's actually a tipping point that works in the Earth's favour here?

Ironically the Economist suggested that the Inflation Reduction Act was anything but (essentially big spending projects can add further heat to the economy, especially where large amounts of raw materials and construction are involved).

That aside the environmental aspect should be warmly welcomed from one of the worst polluters per capita.

Hope so. But I share your concerns.

Difficult to say that a $370 billion package will create a global shift. It may well create an irreversible domestic shift but that will be meaningless if production and emissions are moved overseas instead.

Perhaps we should just accept it’s a big step and a big commitment? But it’s hard not to be cynical over climate change responses that never seem to achieve enough fast enough.

And none of which means we wait and see. Many other steps – in the US, UK and globally – still need to be taken. So let’s crack on without resting on our imaginary laurels.
